Scholarships awarded to over 30 international students

1 April 2014

A total of 33 new international students from countries required to pay tuition fees have been offered scholarships for the 2014/15 academic year. The funding comes from the Erling-Persson Scholarship Foundation, Baltic Foundation and the Swedish Council for Higher Education.

After tuition fees were introduced in Sweden for in autumn 2011, the number of incoming international degree programme students from outside the EU/EEA diminished drastically. A gradual increase in the number of applicants at Umeå University took place in 2012 and 2013, and the positive trend is continuing for autumn 2014 entry.

For the benefit of students from outside the EU/EEA to study in Sweden, the government has earmarked funds for scholarships, with the Swedish Council for Higher Education (URH) being responsible for the distribution. According to Per A Nilsson A, international strategist at Umeå University, the total amount decreased by more than SEK 800,000 for the academic year 2014/15 compared with the previous year.

"The new UHR scholarships amounts to a total of SEK 430,000 this year, which is a decrease compared to last year," says Per A Nilsson. "The funds will be distributed to nine new students who will study in different English-language taught degree programmes at the university."

Per A Nilsson is also pleased that there are also special funds from the Erling-Persson Scholarship Foundation and Baltic Foundation.

"A total of 33 new students at Umeå University have been offered scholarships for the upcoming autumn term," says Per A Nilsson. "Additionally, more scholarships will be granted when the Swedish Institute publishes its list on 8 April."
